Artist Information

JJ PEET’s work takes form through a multitude of processes, utilizing video, ceramics, painting, sculpture, glass, or any available material in the construction of an ongoing narrative that marries PEET’s political investigations and civil protests with the creation of art.

Political responsiveness is fundamental to all of PEET’s work, touching on topics such as the volatility of the financial markets, environmental issues, and America’s ongoing wars. For PEET, time in the studio provides a more reflective and personal space to process a range of layered historical influences within the work. He observes current affairs with some distance, preferring instead a longer view of America’s historical rise to super-power status and the questionable and often concealed political operatives that ensued as that happened. Fraught exploration of the roles and evidence of elitism, privilege, and class in post-war American painting also permeate his compositions.

A keen awareness of medium-specific histories and implied hierarchies also play into PEET’s work, which serve to further comment on current affairs, class, and power. PEET’s work is unique in its ability to seamlessly construct a complex and highly conceptual body of work with equal mastery of craft and acute aesthetic sensitivity.

Recent solo exhibitions include On Stellar Rays, New York, NY (2015, 2012, 2010, 2009); the Contemporary Austin, Austin, TX (2015); Redling Fine Art, Los Angeles, CA (2013); Gallery Diet, Miami, FL (2013, 2010). Recent group exhibitions include Satan Ceramics, Salon 94, New York, NY (2014) and the Public Art Fund, New York, NY (2011). These exhibitions received numerous reviews, in publications such as Art in America, Artforum, ArtPulse, Art Review, Bomb, Frieze, The Last Magazine, Modern Painters, The New Yorker and TimeOut NY. JJ PEET received his MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2006 and his BFA from the University of Minnesota in 1999. He currently teaches ceramics at Columbia University as well as at the 92nd Street Y in New York, where serves as Faculty Chair.
